Osteoporosis
Yesterday I went to a meeting where the topic of Osteoporosis was one of the main subjects.
Not only is the rise in male osteoporosis progressing (1:9 not 1:12 as it was) – it is becoming a real problem in our children. NO LONGER is it a problem just for older women and pregnant women. It is a silent epidemic that is spreading.
Fizzy drinks, lack of full nutrient content in food - lack of sufficient minerals in the CORRECT balance (calcium alone will NOT put it right and could cause more complications), sedentary lives.....it's all out there and happening – but generally people will disregard back pain, aches, tiredness etc as "just a hectic lifestyle" and no thought is given to the possible onset of osteoporosis.
Why would we? If we don’t know about it.
Well, I am telling you – it's here and as far as that goes I’ve done part of my job in letting you know it's happening. For more information get in touch with Janis Duff (details below) – let her know where you got the original information.
Can you redress the balance? Yes, I have! It’s not that difficult..just a few changes to a daily routine is all you need to consider...
The story below is my own and it came as quite a shock I can tell you!
Dr Janis Duff came to Dorchester – 9th November to talk on Osteporosis.
Hi .......
Just to keep you in the loop!!
we have just been to the talk about nutrition and osteoporosis.....guess who has it...???!!!
We went to this talk as part of our Neways education and general info to be able to pass on and help others. Dr. Janis Duff came down to talk and also to do scans for anyone who wanted one.
Well for the sake of education and wanting to know, we had ours done.
Hilly was worried because she has had HRT (she stopped it as it was making her ill), she is on tablets for blood pressure, we had had a load of stress in the family etc etc (just a couple of things that can contribute to Osteo) and so she was getting really worried.
Turns out that she is ‘well above the line’ so to speak....!! It’s me that is way down!!
A couple of things alone would probably have contributed to my condition – severe IBS for years, again stress in family may well have had an effect!!There may well be others, but I don’t drink now and don't smoke. I used to be more active than I am now, but that’s easily put right!
It’s quite possible (I hope!) that I’m on the way up as we are now using the proper supplements, not using personal care products that have potentially harmful ingredients, excercise (more needed!) etc, and IBS went immediately on starting those and not so stressed any more etc....!! Funny old life innit!!?? And I thought I was ok!!!
It’s now prevalent in young girls, (and boys) with bad eating habits and lots of fizzy drinks, younger women and men. No longer just the treat for older women!!
- A few lifestyle things that can increase risk:
- Smoking
- Excessive alcohol
- Low intake of dietary calcium
- Constant dieting
- High protein diets
- Excessive use of fizzy drinks
- lack of weight bearing excercise
Who is at risk of Osteoporosis?
- Everyone – now...
- Women: 1:3
- Men 1:9
- 90% of the younger people now at risk
- A test in USA of 1000 13 year olds – ALL had osteoporosis
- Post menopausal women
- Family history of osteoporosis
- Steroid medication
- Early hysterectomy
- Anorexia
- Alcoholism
- Certain diseases also cause excess bone loss – cancer, kidney problems, thyroid disorders, high blood pressure, and coeliac malabsorption syndromes (IBS, Crohns...etc)
- Younger children, teenagers and young men, increasingly more prevalent these days due to poor diet, lack of excercise, too many sweets and fizzy drinks.
Couple of symptoms – constant tiredness, aches and pains for no particular reason, fibromyalgia, so many more that I was amazed at the number! A lot of things have tended to fall into place tonight about the way I have been over the years....scary or what!!
Prevention is better than cure – 20 minutes walking per day is an excellent way to increase bone mass. Supplements are vital these days as nearly all our food is low in the vital nutrients – especially minerals....
Interesting fact: Dr Janis Duff was in a health club testing all the body builders. She took one on in an arm wrestling contest.....the guys’ bone snapped! Why...? Too much protein in their diet – ie red meat to build muscle etc....and no supplementation. All the body builders had low bone density........and they weren’t very happy people...
Anyway – nuff o’ that – What are we using...? Maximol - the mainstay mineral supplement - an amazingly powerful product. You should supplement now, even if you eat a balanced diet. The fruit and veg we eat is unfortunately not as well stocked with minerals and vitamins as it used to be 50 years ago.
And we’re using the right products!! Am I glad, I think I am!!
Bye for now....Mike
